During the holidays, I’m often treated to some fantastic wines. One of those wines was 1000 Stories Wines Zinfandel. It was a gift from my brother who was very excited to have me taste it. What can I say… WOW… if you’re a Zinfandel lover, it’s nothing short of amazing.
So what is their story? 1000 Stories Wines, as it indicates on their label, ages their wine in bourbon barrels sourced from a number of American classic bourbon producers. It would account for the wonderful background notes one detects on the first few sips. Their label took inspiration from the pioneering spirit of the Gold Rush era and the plight of the iconic American Bison. All of which come with 1000’s of stories, thus the name, and the label.
1000 Stories Wines Zinfandel
1000 Stories Wines, a Mendocino vintner, is a staunch supporter of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). They’ve worked with this organization to help develop programs to reintroduce the Buffalo into healthy environments where they can thrive and contribute to the ecosystem as they once did.
The American Bison suffered massive losses at the turn of the 19th century leaving the population with less than a 1000 Buffalo. To save these iconic creatures, an intense conservation effort was started in the early 1900’s. WCS has been able to build an active community of experts, ranchers, and Native American tribes in an attempt to restore the natural habitat of the Buffalo. The Buffalo population has since rebounded to approximately 450,000. Sadly fewer than 20,000 are roaming in the wild. They have much work to do, but there is great optimism for the iconic American Buffalo.
This is what the winemaker has to say about their 1000 Stories Wines Zinfandel:
“The wine has a deep, rich purple color. An intense raspberry fruit is on the nose, with black pepper spice and a touch of cloves and dried herbs. The palate is full with ripe tannins, big black, and red fruits, followed by an array of spices. The wine finishes with a touch of warmth that lingers on and on.”
You can find this wine on their website or ask a good wine purveyor. It’s worth seeking out.
To say I love this 1000 Stories Wines Zinfandel would be an understatement. I’m very lucky to have a brother who runs onto wines like this and is inclined to send me a bottle or two when he does. Now I need to get back to enjoying this amazing Zinfandel. Cheers.
Time for a glass…
