Making Powdered Milk Taste Better: Recipe

by Susan P. Cooper · on Oct 18, 2012 · 28

I drink milk every day. I use it with my homemade granola in the morning for a quick breakfast. The problem is I never finish the half-gallon of milk before it goes bad and I wind up throwing it away.

I decided that the solution might be to use powdered milk instead. The challenge was making powdered milk taste better.  If I could solve that problem I could make what I needed and not waste so much milk. Don’t you think that sounds like it would work? Well, it did, but I just didn’t like the way the milk tasted. So I experimented and found a way to make it taste the way I like, and it almost tastes like the milk I buy at the store.

So, here goes:

Making Powdered Milk Taste Better

Ingredients: (Makes 1 quart)

  • 4 cups of bottle water
  • 1 1/3 cups powdered milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract

Directions:

Place the powdered milk in a quart pitcher. Pour in the water and mix until well blended. Add the sugar and vanilla and mix until thoroughly blended and chill.

Notes: I use bottled water because the water has a fresher cleaner taste and won’t interfere any off taste with the other flavors. Always use a good vanilla. Any kind of good quality powdered milk will do.

I believe I have succeeded in making powdered milk taste better.  I’ve been using this recipe for a while, and it works very well. Most importantly, it’s really good. The best part about mixing your own milk is I now don’t waste it, it is so much cheaper, and it tastes really great. I hope you find this helpful and will give it a try. Enjoy.

Time to eat…
