I was in the process of working on a butter cookie recipe for St. Patrick’s Day. I needed colored sugar so off I went to the store. First of all it cost $4 for 3oz., and then they didn’t even have what I needed.
You know the saying; necessity is the mother of invention. I did some research and found out I could make my own homemade colored sugar. WOO! HOO!… It worked, and the cost was pennies compared to what I would have paid at the store. Here is the best part. My own homemade own colored sugar is just way too easy to believe.
Homemade Colored Sugar
Ingredients:
- Regular or Coarse Sugar
- Food Coloring
Directions:
Pour a small amount of coarse or regular sugar into a small bowl. Put a few drops of food coloring into the sugar. Work the food coloring into the sugar with a fork until the color is blended and consistent.
To make the decorative sugar a little darker, add a drop or two of food coloring at a time and blend well. Continue to do this until you’ve reached the desired color. If you’re looking for a pastel color and added to much food coloring, add a little more sugar and work in with the fork until it’s the color you’re looking for. Let it dry a bit and then bottle it or put it in to a small Ziploc bag for later use.
Note: You can do the same thing with any type of sugar or even salt. The coarse sugar has a sparklier affect. The regular sugar is a finer texture, but it’s still as pretty.
That is all there is to it. It was so easy, and it was also really fun to make. So much so that I went a little crazy making different colors. I now have way more than I need for St Patrick’s Day and enough to last me all the way through Mother’s Day… LOL. Enjoy.
Happy Cooking…
