Twisted Roots Winery Old Vine Zinfandel was a fun find. My friend and I had just recently ventured back to Lodi for their Farmer Market & Street Fair. We had dinner at a place recommended by a local, and it was as fun as they said it would be. Of course, we had to have some wine to go with our meal – :-). The wine we choose was from a local vintner called Twisted Roots Winery. Don’t you love that name? It was their old vine Zinfandel. This wine is everything you would hope for in an old-vine Zinfandel.

Twisted Roots Winery was the dream of Ross Schmiedt. After over 30 years of growing great wine grapes for others, he decided it was time to make his own. So in 2005, Twisted Roots was born. They started with a Petite Sirah. In 2009, production was expanded to include other varietals. Twisted Roots Winery is primarily recognized for their Petite Sirah. They also offer Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Old Vine Zinfandel, which is what we enjoyed with our dinner. Twisted Roots Winery has been dedicated to sustainable grape growing practices since their inception.
The coolest thing Twisted Roots Winery does is they donate one dollar for every bottle they sell to the ALS Association Chapters in California (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or what we know as Lou Gehrig’s disease).
Twisted Roots Winery is centered in the heart of the Lodi wine region, just south of Sacramento. Lodi has been a major winegrape growing region since the 1850’s. Today, the area has 100,000 acres of wine grapes. The Lodi Wine Region is best known for its full-bodied old vine Zinfandel wines. What isn’t well known is Lodi leads all the California wine districts in the production of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier wine and wine grapes.
Some of the major wineries found here are Robert Mondavi Woodbridge, Turner Road Vintners, Sutter Home Winery, Bear Creek Winery, and Oak Ridge Winery. We can’t forget that 60 of the leading California wineries buy grapes from this region which includes buyers such as Ernest & Julio Gallo, Fetzer, Ravenswood, and Beringer to name just a few.
There are also over 70 different boutique wineries, some that have won major awards in domestic and international wine competitions. The Lodi area, in my estimation, is a hidden gem of a wine region, one very much worth exploring.
This is what the vintner has to say about this Twisted Roots Winery Old Vine Zinfandel:
“The old zinfandel grapes vines are what started it all at Twisted Roots. When our family settled in the Lodi area in the early 1900s, the first thing they planted was the Zinfandel on the “Dairy” Ranch. Our old Vine Zinfandel is spicy and intense, offering up a rich, jammy flavors of black cherry and blackberry. You will also find some notes of licorice, black pepper, and vanilla, as well. This is a full-bodied wine that can be served with everything from pepperoni pizza to a great beef tri-tip. If you’re looking to served this with a cheese course, it goes nicely with an aged Parmesan and Dry Monterey Jack cheeses.”
You can find this fun and full-bodied Zinfandel at their store online or their tasting room in Lodi on 2 Lockforde Street.
If you’re a Zinfandel fan, you will enjoy this Twisted Roots Winery Old Vine Zinfandel. It is very easy to buy it online, and very reasonably priced even with the shipping cost included.
