It never fails to surprise me how you can find some excellent wines at such inexpensive prices. This Chardonnay from Sebastiani Winery is one of them.
Sebastiani Winery
In 1895, Samuele Sebastiani, a winemaker, emigrated from Tuscany. Samuele’s first trade in his new country was not as a winemaker, but a stonemason. He quarried the hills of Sonoma for cobblestones that were used for the streets in San Francisco. His hard labor helped him save to buy land in Sonoma to make wine. Nine years later Samuele was able to buy the land he desired to create Sebastiani Winery, the first winery in Sonoma County.
Samuele Sebastiani was a strong supporter of the land and his community. During Prohibition and the Great Depression he found ways to support his community by creating jobs through various projects, some of which still stand today. He was able to sustain his winery; along with making small amounts of sacramental and medicinal wines he canned peaches, pears, and nectarines.
After Samuele’s passing in 1944, his son, August, and wife Sylvia purchased the winery from the estate and began expanding the winery and its facilities.
August was recognized as one of America’s most skilled and innovative winemakers of his time. August was also an avid preservationist, demonstrated by his lifelong support of Ducks Unlimited. Continuing in his father’s footsteps, he valued the craftsmen of Sonoma and used their skills at the winery wherever possible.
This heritage and tradition was passed on to Bill Foley who purchased Sebastiani Winery in 2008. Today, the winery is making some of its finest wines in its long history. Samuele Sebastiani would be proud.
The Sebastiani Winery is located in the Sonoma Wine Region in Northern California. Sonoma is one of my favorite areas to visit for a day and spend a little time finding and tasting some the wines that come from this wine region. If you find yourself in this area, seek out Sebastiani Winery, pack a picnic basket, enjoy the available wines, and the amazing ambiance of this area.
This what the vintner had to say about their Chardonnay:
“Our Chardonnay possesses a wonderful elegance due to the coolness of the vintage. While the wine still has the abundant orchard fruit flavors typical of SonomaCounty Chardonnay, it also displays more citrus, acidity and minerality than we have seen in the past. The oak profile is also subdued to better match the wine’s intensity, but there is still plenty of inherent texture and ripeness thanks to the Indian summer and frequent stirring of the lees. Overall, this is one of the most balanced, complex and delicious Sonoma County Chardonnays we’ve produced in years.”
You can find this wine at wine.com, bevmo.com totalwines.com, amazon.com or any good local wine purveyor.
This Chardonnay from Sebastiani Winery is well worth seeking out. We certainly enjoyed this Chardonnay with a 3 course cheese plate, honey and very lightly salted dry roasted almonds. With much laughter and conversation, it was great fun for all.
Time for a glass…
