This Homemade Granola was posted a long time ago. I have since made some changes to this recipe. I also made a ton of this during the holidays for personal use and as requested gifts from my kitchen, The fact is, this granola works any time of the year. All that said I thought I would share this again.
I had once heard that if you have ever made and had a homemade granola recipe you would never find yourself buying it off the grocery store shelf again. Sometimes homemade items are better than store bought, sometimes not so much. In this case, it is definitely true. When I went in search of a granola recipe I was amazed at the variety that existed. I settled on a recipe by Mark Bitmann from “How To Cook Everything”. After much tweaking, this is now my favorite homemade granola recipe.

- 6 cups Trader Joe’s or Country Choice Multi-Grain (18oz box of the gran and oatmeal mixture)
- 6 cups chopped mixed nuts and seeds (equal amounts of your choice of nuts: walnuts, pecans, almonds, cashews, hazels nuts & sunflower seed)
- 1 cup roasted pistachios
- 1 cup unsweetened shaved or shredded coconut
- 1/2 tablespoon cinnamon or to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons wheat germ
- 3 pinches of salt
- 12 oz jumbo raisins or diced mixed dried fruit
- 1 1/2 cup of good quality honey
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine Trader Joe’s or Country Choice Multi-Grain, nuts and seeds, coconut, cinnamon, nutmeg. wheat germ and salt. Mix the ingredients until they are evenly distributed. Then add the honey and mix until combined. Pour and evenly spread the mixture into an 18 x 12 sheet-cake pan. Bake for 30 minutes; stirring every 10 minutes or so. The mixture needs to brown evenly. The browner it gets the crunchier the granola. (I prefer mine medium brown)
Remove the pan from the oven. Add the raisins or dried fruit and pistachios, stirring until evenly distributed. Let cool. Stir occasionally until the granola comes to room temperature. Store in a sealed glass container in the refrigerator. The granola will keep indefinitely.
Note: I usually buy my nuts in bulk, chop them up and freeze them for future use. That makes it very quick, and an easy way to have nuts on hand for a recipe like this. If you wish to add more honey go ahead. Just be aware that the more honey you add the sticker and sweeter it gets. You can use plain oatmeal or a mix of different grains in place of the Trader Joe’s or Country Choice Multi-Grain. I just like the combination of different grains in the Trader Joe’s Multi-Grain cereal. You can store the granola in a pantry or a cool dry place instead of the refrigerator. I just prefer to store it in the refrigerator.
Since I’ve started making my own homemade granola, I can honestly say, I haven’t bought an off the shelf brand since. I eat this granola just plain with milk. It’s also good with yogurt and honey in a parfait or sprinkled on top of ice-cream as a topping. This homemade granola recipe is super versatile and super good. Enjoy.
