I couldn’t help it.  With Valentine’s Day approaching, I thought it would be fun to showcase something a bit different.  That something would be chocolate wine.  You heard me, chocolate wine, two, in fact.  The decision all started with a discussion with a wine buyer about chocolate wine. I asked what the different chocolate wines were like and if they were any good.  The buyer recommended two, Red Decadence and Chocolate Red Wine.  So I bought both to check them out for myself. Did I say I love chocolate?

Generally speaking, infusing chocolate in to the fermentation process creates chocolate wine.  That is what gives each of these wines a distinctive chocolate taste.

Red Decadence is produced by Chocolatier Wines a brand of the Precept Winery out of Seattle, Washington.  Percept Winery was established in 2003, the largest privately owned wine company in the Northwest.  They go by the mantra that “wine without character isn’t worth drinking” that it “improves the quality of life” and “reflects the people who make it”.

Chocolate Shop (Red Wine) is produced by Chocolate Shop Wines. They are “A purveyor of all things chocolate“, and as a result, are a stand out from the traditional winery tasting rooms in Walla Walla, Washington.

Both are located in Walla Walla Washington.

Walla Walla, Washington, known for Walla Walla sweet onions are also the home of numerous wineries.  Its name comes from an Indian word that translates into “Place of Many Waters”.  The locals will joke and say Walla Walla is “A town so nice, they named it twice”.  Walla Walla is a beautiful area located in southeast Washington.  It is ideally located in a great wine grape growing area that now produces some of the best wine in the country.  As a result, this area has become a popular spot for wine enthusiasts.

Here is what is said about each of these chocolate infused wines.

Red Decadence Wine:The aromas and flavors of black cherry, blueberry, and plum with touches of rich velvety dark chocolate. The combination of deep ruby red wine with a natural chocolate essence is like liquid chocolate truffle in a bottle. It is truly the best of both worlds.  Indulge yourself.”

Chocolate Shop (Red Wine): “Inviting aromas of black cherry and dark chocolate entwine and continue on the palate surrounded by hints of cocoa powder. Nuances of red wine and residual sugar linger on the smooth finish.

Sweetening the tongues for centuries, chocolate and red wine has been the most reliable pairing in history. Chocolate Shop takes this pairing to the next level, marrying chocolate flavor with red wine to create a sumptuous drink. We start with a proprietary red blend of the finest vinifera varietals, add a touch of oak and a kiss of sweetness to create the perfect fruit-driven foil for the rich dark chocolate which unfolds in silken layers across the palate.”

So the question you might ask is, how did I like them?  I’m usually not a big fan of overly sweet wine, but hey, it had chocolate in it.  Each is very different from the other.  Red Decadence has a stronger red wine influence with a very prominent chocolate essence in the taste.  It isn’t as sweet as the Chocolate Red Wine, which also had the same prominent chocolate essence. To answer the question, I and my friend did overwhelmingly prefer Red Decadence over the Chocolate Shop.

We very much enjoyed Red Decadence by itself and with my Dark Chocolate Truffles. It is a match made in chocolate heaven.  I did say I loved chocolate, didn’t I?

You can find these Chocolate Wines at bevmo.com, wine.com, totalwine.com, amazon.com, World Market/CostPlus, Whole Foods or most any wine outlet, just ask your local wine buyer. Enjoy!

Happy Wineing…

I’ve noticed a few chocolate wines over and over again at Cost Plus, but have never been brave enough to give them a try. Maybe now I will have to pick one up and see for myself.

Hi Jeri, Neither was I until I talked to the my wine buyer friend. I was very pleasantly surprised. Enjoy. :-)

  • Julie

I’ve been a tad afraid to try this, but now I’ll have to check it out. BTW: I LOVED the La Crema Chardonnay.

    • http://findingourwaynow.com/ Susan Cooper

Hi Julie, You’re not alone. :-) . Let me know what you think when you do.

I am so happy that you enjoy the La Crema. :-)

    • http://findingourwaynow.com/ Susan Cooper

Hi Julie, So was I. some are really not very good. Red Decadence was a surprise and may be something you would enjoy. I ams so glad La Crema was a great experience for you. :-)

  • Doreen Pendgracs

Hi Susan: My dear friend, I believe this is the 1st time I will disagree with you. I’ve never tried the Red Decadence Wine, but I have tried the red Chocolate Shop wine and severely disliked it. In fact, someone had bought me another bottle of it and it’s been sitting in our wine rack for months as I don’t want to drink it. It you lived closer, I’d bring it over!

    • http://findingourwaynow.com/ Susan Cooper

Hi Doreen, I hear you. If you did, I have friend who adores it so I would pass it along. Red Decadence was a surprise and I have to admit I was skeptical. To set he record straight I still prefer and a good full bodied red wine paired with a great dark chocolate. :-)

If I drank wine, something with chocolate or tasting like chocolate would be good for me. :)

    • http://findingourwaynow.com/ Susan Cooper

Red Decadence was my favorite. I believe you would find it a fun drinking experience. :-)

  • Elena

I can’t help myself when it comes to chocolate – add wine and I definitely would lose my head. :)

    • http://findingourwaynow.com/ Susan Cooper

Hi Elena, Me too! That’s why I just had to give them a try. :-)

  • Jon Jefferson

I would never have suspected a vintner to do something like this. For the most part I always assumed most vintners were purists and would avoid doing something like this because it would destroy the sanctity of the holy grape. (I have met sommeliers who actually think like that)

    • http://findingourwaynow.com/ Susan Cooper

Hi Jon, More and more vintner are exploring the opportunity to do so. I am hearing more a more noise about it from any vintners of note. It will be interesting to see where it all goes. :-)

  • Rebecca Rider

Oooo these wines look yummy!! :-D

    • http://findingourwaynow.com/ Susan Cooper

They really fun Rebecca, If you try them, let me know what you think. :-)

  • Catarina Alexon

Never thought of buying red wine to have with chocolate. By the time we get to chocolate after a meal we usually have brandy, Amaretto or something similar to go with it.

    • http://findingourwaynow.com/ Susan Cooper

Hi Catarina, A full bodied red wine is really amazing with a dark chocolate. Give it a try sometime. :-)

  • Mary Slagel@Financial-Lessons

Chocolate wine?! What a wonderful idea. I personally am not a huge chocolate fan–which I’ve never understood how that works out–but I do cherish good bacon. Now I know how others reacted when I wrote an article about bacon flavored liquor like vodka and whiskey. It’s amazing what they are coming out with these days.

    • http://findingourwaynow.com/ Susan Cooper

Hi Mary, We sometimes forget that some people are not into chocolate. I admit I do love bacon and had not heard of flavored alcohol or liquor. Being an adventuresome soul, I would want the give these a try. :-)

  • http://joannerambling.wordpress.com/ Jo-Anne

How I would love to try this

    • http://findingourwaynow.com/ Susan Cooper

I know you would love it Jo-Anne. :-)

I have never heard of chocolate wines. How does it compare to a good red and a piece or 5 chocolates separately?

    • http://findingourwaynow.com/ Susan Cooper

Hi Susan, It is something new that is taking on more popularity. Some are better then others. If I had a choice I prefer and good red wine paired with a great dark chocolate. That said I found Red Decadence surprising good. :-)

Oh yum, with my two pound box of See’s candy! Even the wine label looks delicious. Enjoy your day, Susan.

Hi Margaret. WOW, chocolate overload… :D Thanks and you too. :-)

  • Sarah Brescia

Chocolate wine? When I come of age, I am going to have some serious problems on my hands.

    Loved your post!

Hi Sarah, Hee, hee may be. Enjoy. :-)

  • HomeJobsbyMOM

My dad is big into eating wine with chocolate or sometimes he does strawberries. I need to try it out sometime.

Hi Krystle, Aw… wine, chocolate and strawberries… what is there not to like about that. :-)
